Mekton Zeta: Headhunters
Example SSS session
nj: No Idea for now
tz: Tradition dictates that it have either Fear or Boot in the title.
“Fear the Mekton” works for me
BASIC SERIES INFORMATION
nj: I like mercenary/war in the 08Th MS Team kinda era/feel.
e2: A mercenary group or even a actual military would work wonderfully.
The only thing I am particular against slice of life anime that happens
to have mechs.
tz: Mercs seem to be winning combo. Militaristic without the limitions
that military life entails.
nj: Mecha Sci-Fi
e2: Depends on what the general world would be. If set in the mercenary
group idea a scifi with mechs would work. Also I am up for a more modern
take with some scifi elements thrown in. Sercret society using mech etc.
tz: Mecha Sci-Fi works for me
LIGHT, MEDIUM OR SERIOUS?
nj: A mix of Light and Medium. Light hearted, but known that bad shit can
and most likely will happen.
e2: I prefer to keep it light or medium however if a military game is
requested I think the mode should be serious.
tz: medium, since mercs is not serious enough for military
nj: I like fantasy realism. Elves and shit, but pretty realistic.
e2: Fairly close to reality but fantasy elements of game can have their
own rules if they have a logical explanation. Examples being magic, races,
highly advanced machinery not appropriate for the time period.
tz: What about sci-fi with fantasy analogs? Low G ‘elves’ and high G ‘dwarves’,
more fantastic ‘monster’ races as aliens
nj: Biotech and Nanotech?
e2: I would prefer to avoid nano tech technology just because it can
solve most problems. Bio technology totally works.
tz: bio tech seems a winner
nj: Not sure really
tz: it has to be far enough in the future that humanity would genetically
engineer itself to support life in zero G and high G environments
nj: Tissue, Cloning, Bio-Tanks
tz: those totally work for me since bio-tech is available
nj: Mecha, powersuits, and great advances in medical tech.
tz: while bio-tech is the new hotness, it has not advanced to the point
that people can be cloned with their memories intact, ‘blanks’ can be grown
in vats to provide organ and limb replacement
nj: None that I can think of.
tz: researching this…
PLAYER CHARACTER INFORMATION
ROLE OF THE PCS?
nj: All walk’s of life into mech jockies?
tz: that works just fine for a merc group
RANDOM, CONCEPT OR CINEMATIC?
nj: I prefer Concept.
nj: Some sort of military training, or a place in said squad. Like a
mechanic, dealer, that kinda stuff.
e2: Experienced in some form of combat and could grow as characters from
tz: mercs would need to wear a lot of hats since you don’t have specialists
like the military have
nj: Really, this is up to anyone.
e2: No unicron base fights.
tz: as this setting firms up, it looks like no PC limits on stats or skills
I think some of the ‘monster’ races of aliens might be off limits.
PROS & TEMPLATES?
nj: Something that can be useful in a mercenary squad. Which could really
be a lot of things. From medic, to understanding business deals.
tz: since there is no magic tech, every profession should be available
nj: Doesn’t matter to me.
e2: For the most part indifferent
tz: following the fantasy aliens theme, yes since we’ll want sci-fi ‘magic’
nj: see above.
e2: see above.
tz: sure, but if we have more than one in the group, they need to be unique
in their roles
ESPER POWER LEVEL?
nj: Not as powerful as killing people with mind bullets.
e2: Maybe minor force powers
tz: right, I’d still prefer for them to drive mecha with psi as secondary gig
I just read through the psi rules and there are a number of switchs that can
be flipped to tune how you want psi to function in your game. The four main
Separate stat or use Luck/Empathy? If separate, other stats become lower.
How may psi points are available? A multipler that sets how often psi is used.
Are skills capped or limited? Hard limits on psi power and skills available.
Are there wild talents? They are cheaper, but lock the PC into a single skill.
FREQUENCY OF ESPERS?
nj: If there were espers I would say rare.
tz: agreed for humans, but I could see some other races where it is common
nj: Aliens are cool! Heck, Elves, Dwarves, things like that could be aliens.
tz: as mentioned above, I’d like to think some of these aliens are gene
modified humans and others are real aliens
nj: Common Day.
e2: Common Day.
tz: humans and human morphs (remember bio-tech) are common, the ‘real’ aliens
might be rarer depending on if humanity has allies among the stars
nj: I support this with Elves and Dwarves and All sorts fun things!
tz: PC mind flayers, not so much, but I can see elves, dwarves, and hybrids
GOVERNMENT & CULTURE INFORMATION
nj: Current day ish?
tz: given the possibility that we’re looking a century or more in the future,
most countries will be the same, but there will be some shake-ups and perhaps
some new power blocks.
nj: Some different things involving countries. Seeing as each place would
have a different kind of weapon set, or even use for mechs. Hell, even if
they have mechs at all.
tz: sure, different countries will have their favorite mecha makers and
technologies, the military would have mecha for sure, but I’d like to think
that they has not been anything like a world war, perhaps Cold War II or
the development of FTL and alien contact has changed the world perspective
nj: Current Solar system? Hell, the “alien/fantasy” races could just be from
tz: that’s one angle and makes sense for gene engineered races, but I’d like
to have aliens from outside of the solar system as well
nj: Doesn’t really matter to me.
tz: it doesn’t sound like earth has an empire, so space exploration may still
be in the early stages
nj: English as a given, and then alien’fantasy race’s start with what ever
their language would be? I suppose they could have a crude dialect.
tz: so among humans, hybrids, low G, and high G races, English is the common
language and ‘real’ aliens (enemy or allied) will have to learn it on their own
SUPERHEROIC OR MILITARY?
tz: Military, looks like the clear winner, no power rangers
ROLE OF MECHA?
nj: Commonly used as weapons of war, but have been adapted for use in hazardous
area’s, logging, factory work, that kinda stuff.
tz: I’m getting the feel that mecha in this setting are more along the lines of
frames or exo-suits rather than building sized units. Giant mecha would not fit
in a forest, factory, or hazardous environment job like aquatic or space.
nj: Pretty pricey, not rare, but damn expensive.
e2: Pretty pricey, not rare, but damn expensive. If in a less futuristic
setting could be rare or tied into magic in some way making them rare
because of the organizations that created them.
tz: Sounds like something in the construction equipment range, expensive and
pretty specialized, units with military hardware even more so and maybe licensed
nj: Honestly I was thinking 08th Ms Team as a setting, so what ever those
requirements would be.
tz: That’s pretty much the generic/default setting. I’d like to pitch mecha at the
road striker/vehicle scale being the norm, based on the above logic.
nj: in the 8th MS team, they had standard gundam weaponry, beam, ballistic,
things along that line.
tz: while we have bio-tech which can do all kinds of neat stuff for material science
it does not adress energy production, if there are energy weapons, I’d like to see
them limited to ammo clips or batteries, no light sabers
MTS SYSTEMS NOT AVAILABLE?
nj: Not a fan of transforming, but I could see cloaking
e2: Transforming as a option would be good.
tz: If we go with something like an exo-suit, transformations would be hard to explain
unless the pilot is a brain in a jar. That’s not to say that you could not bolt on a
flight pack or a zero G rig. While there is psi, I don’t think there should be a psi
lens option for human mecha.
WEIGHT EFFICIENCY LIMIT?
nj: Realistic weight.
tz: That works, no super materials.
SPACE EFFICIENCY LIMIT?
nj: Everybody should be on pretty even ground.
tz: Good, no super miniturization of equipment
nj: Honestly, it doesn’t matter that much to me. But again I think we should
all be on pretty common ground.
tz: agreed, I’d prefer to see everyone operating at the same scale. It’s makes
it easier if we don’t have power loaders fighting side by side with mountains of
nj: As for the other stuff involving star ships it doesn’t matter that much
to me. I would really think Government and Corporations would have major use
of them instead of civilian.
tz: I think that it’s early enough that space exploration is a game that only
governments and corporations play. As mercs, you could hired either by a
corp or perhaps a cilivian agency if space travel is involved, unless you’re
passengers on a transport.
SPACE TRAVEL AVAILABILITY?
tz: regular shuttle flights to orbit exist, I don’t think we’re at bean stalk
levels of technology. There are multiple space ports available on Earth.
tz: I’ve heard nothing about anti-gravity (if we had it, there would be no need
for space elves.) This means conventional technology such as chemical rockets
are used in space. That implies space travel can take a very long time due to
the huge distances involved. Unless… we have a way of cheating.
tz: Since we have psi and bio-tech, I’d like to pitch the idea that FTL travel
is acutally based on something squishy. Essentially your FTL drive is a very
specialized brain in a jar. This ship’s brain essentially warps space and
either boosts drive performance or uses teleportation/folds space.
tz: If there is a functional FTL drive, this opens up the whole solar system and
beyond. Expect to see space colonies, lunar colonies, orbital factories and
habitats. I’d imagine humanity will be where ever there is science or profit to
be had. So, we’d have hundreds of locations within the solar system.
